Tim Kolehmainen - Editor / Writer / Photographer
(tim@mnsportspreview.com)

Tim is the award-winning editor/writer/photographer for The Breakdown, the encyclopedia of Minnesota high school sports.

Prior to joining The Breakdown, Tim was a sports reporter for the Record-Journal, a daily newspaper in Meriden, Conn. at which he followed the New Britain Rock Cats (Twins Double-A farm team) and UConn women's basketball and football. He has also worked for a weekly newspaper in Buffalo, Minn., at which he won awards for sports photography and as a three-time winner of the Minnesota Newspaper Association's Best Sports Reporting among large weekly newspapers.

It's been a good decade of sports reporting for Tim, who in his previous life was a registered professional civil engineer. His works during those seven years included managing and designing multi-million dollar highway and utility projects, such as the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, the Hermantown municipal water supply and numerous road reconstructions.

Tim recently celebrated his 13th wedding anniversary to his wife (Michelle). They have two daughters, Lily (age 5) and Sadie (age 2) and live in Moorhead, Minn. He's a Duluth East and Michigan Tech graduate, so he's seen both the highs and lows of hockey in the region. His favorite sports moment is scoring the game-tying (at the buzzer) and overtime game-winning goals as part of a five-goal effort in a heated battle up in the Eveleth Hippodrome back in his glory days. A close second is Jack Morris' 10-inning gem in Game 7 of the 1991 World Series for the Twins.

Where did we come from?

In the frigid spring of 2000, Scott Brake and Justin Hegna were on their way back from a trip to South Dakota when a short conversation about basketball came up. After reading through the Hansen and Anderson Basketball preview from South Dakota, the two thought, "Why wouldn't this work in Minnesota?"

That idea became reality on November 1, 2001 when Minnesota Sports Preview became incorporated. The first edition of The BREAKDOWN came off the press in November, 2002.  Three thousand copies of the boys and girls editions circled the state and wound up landing in 25 states across the nation.

In the Spring of 2004, The BREAKDOWN introduced Brad Raymond has a partner to The Breakdown, joining Hegna. Brad's ideas of turning The BREAKDOWN into a full service basketball operation came quickly. We've been publishing boys and girls basketball previews ever since and in 2008, added both boys hockey and girls volleyball to our great line of previews -- and the number of copies and states has increased many times. But that isn't all.

The BREAKDOWN now is much more than a preview.

The BREAKDOWN is a full-service Minnesota high school sports company, offering season preview publications, in-season and youth tournaments, off-season leagues, newsletters, photography and an extensive website. We’re in our eighth year covering boys and girls basketball, and now in our second season of boys hockey and girls volleyball.

The goal of The BREAKDOWN is simple: We want to offer players, coaches and fans a complete basketball resource and experiences that they will never forget. In short, the BREAKDOWN is the “encyclopedia of Minnesota high school sports.”
