One of the state's best shooters resides in Cottage Grove, Minnesota and plays for Park High School. His name is and he's a 6-foot-0 senior guard with an outstanding shooting touch.
As the Wolfpack enter the New Year with a 5-4 record, their focus is on improvement. They defeated Bemidji and Grand Rapids on a trip up north, handled White Bear Lake, and conquered Minneapolis with wins over Washburn and Roosevelt. But a pair of losses to Como Park, an opening loss to Arlington, and a rough performance against an outstanding Montevideo team has really led to an inconsistent season for this year's team.
The past two seasons Park has been a dangerous team entering the playoffs. Lindstrom and his hard working bunch were feared but as the five seed in a tough section they had to go on the road to face Henry Sibley and Tartan. The games were tough but the results no favorable.
So entering a new year the goals of state are still the same for the Wolfpack but there is a new drive. "Practice has gone very well," said Lindstrom. "It is fun, especially this year, because everyone on the team shares the same drive and that's the state tournament. I think we have a special team this year. We are not very tall but we are very tough. In order for us to have a successful year we will have to outwork teams and be in very good shape to out run them."
Lindstrom enters the year as one of the favorites to win the metro scoring title. Right now he's averaging 25.9 points a game with not one outing less than 20 points. His season high was the 33 he put up against Como Park in the Hamline holiday event.
Conference scoring titles, big scoring outputs, these are nice but Jake has done that and its team success that has him driven. "My main goal would to make it to the State tournament," Jake explained. "That's a goal that the whole team shares. Individually I would like to blossom as a leader.
"I tried to be more outspoken during practice and games last year. This year, the team really needs a leader and I know that has to be me. If that means doing more of the dirty jobs than scoring than that's what it will have to be. I want to do what ever I can to help the team win. I would rather go undefeated and get five points a game rather than lead the state in scoring and have a .500 win percentage."
Jake is one of the toughest players to guard in state because all he needs is a little space to get his deadly jumpshot off. So what has he done to make himself such an elite shooter? "I guess I just never stop shooting," said Lindstrom. "I usually stay after practice and shoot a little extra. I love to play the game and always have. It's really easy to work hard in something you love. I also have a lot of confidence in my shot. Even if I start off cold I will not pass up a good shot. I can't really say anything other than I just shoot as much as I can."
Area schools have definitely taken note of Jake's superior ability over time playing with Park and with AAU teams. But at this point Lindstrom is unsure of what school he will be playing for next year. "As to the level I want to play at, it is very open," Jake stated. "I guess I just want to find the right place where I can work hard, have fun, and hopefully be a part of a winning program. Some of the teams that I have been getting interest from is UMD, Minnesota-Crookston, Bemidji State, Northern State, Minnesota State-Moorhead, Concordia-St. Paul, Drake, and some schools in the MIAC and WIAC."
